SURVIVING YOUR 1st WEEK AS A UXR: Tips for success with your 1:1's

Updated: May 9, 2023

As the first Senior UX Researcher at a startup, your first week is crucial to set the tone for your success. With an emphasis on maximizing your 1:1s with cross-functional partners, here are three takeaways to help you out:

1. Start with Relationship Building: Get to know each other! Spend a few minutes learning about their career highlights and how it relates to the company, and share some perspectives on your background as well. By establishing personal connections, you'll be primed to work together more effectively.

2. Interview Your Partners: Treat your 1:1s as opportunities to gather insights on stakeholder priorities, current projects, and where UX research can provide the most value. Think of it as a mini-study, with 30 minutes of dedicated qualitative interview time and a discussion guide tailored to uncover their needs and pain points.

3. Set Expectations: Don't leave it to chance! Ask your cross-functional partners about their past experiences working with UX Research, and what they might be looking for from you in the future. Share your own experiences, communicate what you can deliver, and make sure you're both on the same page.

Remember, building strong relationships is key to success in your first week and beyond. Use these tips to make the most of your 1:1s and establish yourself as a trusted partner across the organization. Good luck!
